Doja Cat is set to return to pop with her upcoming album Vie, embracing the genre she once stepped away from.
The Grammy-winning star shared new insights with V Magazine, describing Vie as a pop-focused project shaped by retro synths, nostalgic layers, and her own vocal growth. Once critical of pop’s appeal, Doja now celebrates the sound that helped make her a global icon.
“I want to be self-aware enough to admit this is a pop-driven project,” she told V Magazine. “Pop is just that—it’s popular. People treat it like a sport. They enjoy it, but many don’t respect it. They see it like football for girls and gays instead of what it is: music.”
Her words mark a clear change from 2023, when she tweeted that pop no longer excited her. On Vie, Doja aimed to blend nostalgia with modern energy. She leaned into synth-heavy production and subtle nods to childhood.
“I wanted to play with nostalgia using Lo-Fi sounds and samples that remind you of childhood,” she said. “But it’s not an obvious ’80s throwback.”
This allowed her to create music that feels both familiar and fresh. Doja also revealed how much she has grown as a singer.
“Sometimes I’m shocked by what I can do now,” she said. “I couldn’t sing at all before. I’ve learned how to use my voice as an instrument, more than ever in my life.”
That growth fuels the album’s emotional depth. Though Vie has no release date yet, fans are eager for its arrival. Doja Cat’s last album, Scarlet, dropped in September 2023 and marked a darker, experimental turn.
With Vie, she seems ready to reconnect with pop on her own terms, blending the familiar with the new while showcasing her artistic evolution.
